Commission FAQs
-
The cost of a commission can vary significantly based on medium and size of the piece. In general, I charge $30/hour plus variable materials cost (ex: canvas, framing, matte board). Small (under 8×10 inches) charcoal and graphite sketches can often be completed in an hour, depending on the complexity of the subject matter, and would have no materials cost. A large (over 16×24 inches) complex painting may take upwards of 40 hours start to finish.
As I am an art student and still learning some techniques, I do offer discounts for subject matter and mediums that I do not have extensive experience with, in addition to my already relatively low rates.
Please note, a 50% deposit will be required to start work after the scope of work has been agreed to over email.

This also depends significantly on the size and medium of the piece. For a graphite or charcoal sketch, I would likely be able to get it in the mail to you within two weeks. A large oil painting will take significantly longer to create and there is drying time that would also factor into the time until it is in the mail.

For charcoal and graphite sketches,
You fill out the commission form and include a clear reference image to be used in place of the preliminary sketch of a painting or pastel piece.
I respond to your email (typically within three business days) and we reach a mutual agreement on the scope of work, the details of the piece, and a price.
I send an invoice for 50% of the agreed upon price.
Once that payment clears, I will begin the sketch and send a photo at the midway point to ensure that it is in harmony with your vision.
When the sketch is complete, I will send another photo for any final minor adjustments.
When I receive your approval, I will send an invoice for the second half of the price.
Once that payment clears, I will apply fixative to the piece and mail it to you!

For pastel (soft or oil) or paint (oil or acrylic) pieces, there is more flexibility in the reference material.
You fill out the commission form and include a detailed description of your vision and any relevant reference photos (including vibe-based references!)

Once that payment clears, I complete the initial sketch for the piece and send it to you. Any pastel or paint commission price includes up to 2 editing rounds. Each successive round will be charged an additional $30 added to the final invoice. This is why a detailed description of your vision at the beginning of the commission process is essential!
Once the sketch is approved, I will begin work on the pastel or paint piece. For pastel pieces, you will receive a process picture at the midpoint to ensure you are happy with how the piece is going. For paintings, you will receive a process picture at the quarter, mid-, and three-quarters point. These process pictures are for minor adjustments, such as color tone, not structural changes.
When the piece is complete, you will have one final picture sent to you.
After you approve the piece, I will send the final invoice with the second half of the agreed price as well as any additional charges that were incurred in edits.
Once that payment clears and the piece is dry with appropriate fixative/varnish, I will package it up and send it to you!
